I’m a writer, musician, film-maker and music promoter. Which means I do lots and lots of different but increasingly interrelated stuff – on a day-to-day freelance basis as well as longer term contacts

There’s copywriting across all media and marketing disciplines (SEARCH ‘COPYWRITING/CREATIVE DIRECTION TO FIND EXAMPLES) for lots of different commercial and charity/governmental clients for more than 20 years… There’s editing/proofreading of publishers’ fiction and non-fiction manuscripts…(SEARCH ‘BOOKS’ FOR EXAMPLES) There’s screenwriting and film projects (SEARCH ‘FILM’), novel and ghost writing (SEARCH ‘BOOKS’) … And finally there’s a range of live music events and festivals (SEARCH LIVE EVENTS), mostly working with young people through local authorities and youth organisations – and these involve pretty much all the other stuff I do. Featuring Kev Saunders on vocals, Los Ladrones de Amor (The Thieves of Love) are raw, mostly acoustic and angry… Melodic and lyrical songs full of sleaze and soul with a heart of darkness mixing latin grooves and the spirit of punk in songs such as:

I WEAR BLACK – a defiantly melancholy singalong anthem mourning lost youth and refusing to grow old gracefully…. It’s also a bit of a paean to The Clash and Johnny Cash and everything they stand for.

KICK THE DOORS DOWN – with lyrics originally written about the poll tax back in the eighties, this is a furious, percussive 6/8 time, samba-driven protest song for the era of the ConDemNation. Featuring Margaret Thatcher on backing vocals!

TAKASHI O'HASHI'S LATEST ALBUM featuring KEVIN SAUNDERS

More than 20 years ago I answered an ad in Melody Maker for a UK rock singer and fired off some of my songs. Invited to ‘audition’ by writing lyrics and singing to some backing tracks created by the main man TAKASHI O’HASHI (formerly of Japanese metal legends SEIKIMA  and USA sleaze-rockers CATS IN BOOTS), I got the gig and soon found myself in New York City. Recording at various studios, including the legendary Power Station owned by Barry Bon Jovi, I was working with guitar hero Takashi ‘Jam’ O’Hashi, drummer Milt Sutton and bassist Hal Cragin, who went on to join Iggy Pop’s band and co-write Iggy’s American Caesar album… We made an album called NEITHER REALITY NOR FICTION for EMI Japan…

That was then… But a couple of years ago Takashi asked me to co-write a track for his acoustic album (ACODELIA) – and CU NEXT TUESDAY was the result… (Buy it on iTunes!! – just search for ACODELIA by Takashi O’Hashi). More recently, Jonathan Miller and I worked with Takashi over the internet on a radical re-working of a track the old Neither Reality Nor Fiction album: Body and Soul. He added some of his awesome guitar to our pared down, slowed down trip-hop version – and a few months ago he asked if he could include it on his latest album. INDEPENDENT SOULS UNION is Takashi’s collaboration with lots of famous Japanese vocalist/lyricists and your truly. BUY IT – or at least buy BODY AND SOUL on itunes! Co-written and sung by yours truly, HIJACK was the US single from MARDEN HILL’s album BLOWN AWAY (titled HIJACKED in the US).
